Checking for Millipedes and Taking Countermeasures

We found no millipedes indoors! Partly because it is winter.

Still, a year ago they were all around the house and getting inside, so things have improved considerably compared with a year ago.

The steady work of cutting down trees to eliminate shade and improve airflow may have been effective.

The aluminum tape countermeasure didn’t seem to be doing much, so as a further measure we are attaching plastic cardboard.

We have finished installing it on the perimeter wall of the property, and next we will attach it to the building’s foundation.

After a few months, the edges of the aluminum tape start to peel up.

We also did something we had wanted to do for a long time but could never quite bring ourselves to: crawling under the floor to check on the millipede situation.

At this time of year, there are no live ones.

Even with a handheld vacuum, it filled up in 30 seconds, so we gave up for the time being.

Some areas were densely covered with what looked like droppings.

The area behind the entrance was the worst.

Under the floor, there are lots of carcasses beneath the spots where millipedes appear most often.

After cleaning, we are thinking of installing a circulator under the floor.

Even so, the crawl space is so cramped that working there is really hard! It’s army-crawling the whole way.
