How to Fill the Gap Between the Toilet and the Floor

Overview

With a typical toilet installation, a gap forms between the toilet bowl and the floor, and dirt easily gets into it.

This time, we seal the gap with sealant so the area is easy to clean.

I forgot to take a photo before starting the work.

First, mask off the area with masking tape for caulking. The area around the toilet bowl is curved, which makes the job tricky, but since it is not a spot you look at up close every day, we prioritized practicality.

Here is a close-up.

We use a silicone sealant available at any home improvement store. It costs about ¥500.

If you don’t have a caulking gun, buy one of these as well.

Also get a spatula for finishing.

Load the sealant into the caulking gun and fill the gap. Then smooth the surface with the spatula to finish.

Remove the masking tape before the sealant dries.

Up close, the finish is a little rough in places, but not enough to notice in normal use.

Silicone sealant can be peeled off cleanly even after it has fully cured, so it can be redone later if any fixes are needed.
